The funding is part of the government’s annual Public Reserves Management Fund Program and this year will go to the Parkes War Memorial on Memorial Hill, Pioneer Oval and grandstands at the Parkes Racecourse.
More than $17,200 has been allocated for the extension of the remembrance walk at Memorial Hill to allow for disability access, while $29,000 will go towards the replacement of the sub standard lighting at Pioneer Oval with better and more energy efficient lights.
More than $31,400 has been set aside to repair two grandstands – one built in 1894, the other in 1928 – at the Parkes Racecourse, including work to the roofs, brickwork and flooring.
However, this funding was applied for and granted prior to when the October 21 freak storm hit Parkes, which had partially torn the roof of the second grandstand from its structure.
President of the Parkes Jockey Club Mark Ross said the funding now wouldn’t be enough to cover the full damage costs.
The club is still awaiting to hear of the total damage cost to the grandstand.
“Public reserves in our region such as sportsgrounds, showgrounds, community halls, walking tracks and local parks are valued places which are used by our local community every day,” Duty MLC for Orange Sarah Mitchell said.
“This funding is not only vital to the success of our regional communities, but also supports the role our professional and volunteer managers play in the ongoing management of the reserves.”
