It’s something Cr Bill Jayet said a lot of retirees and lap swimmers will be happy about.
The councillor first suggested the idea at council's September 20 meeting, ahead of the pool’s opening in October.
“I have been approached as to why the Parkes Pool can’t remain open between the hours of 8am and 10am during weekdays,” Cr Jayet told the meeting.
“Those asking the question are annual season ticket holders who would find it more convenient to do their lap swimming during the 8am-10am time slot.
“They understand that the current practice has been in place for decades but question why when other pools within the region, such as Forbes, Dubbo, Orange and Cowra remain open from 6am until close of day.”
Cr Jayet said the 6am session was usually occupied by those who work and described the situation to much like Pitt Street.
“Retirees still love to get down there for their early morning swim,” he said.
Director of engineering Ben Howard said, historically the pool had been closed between these hours to allow pool staff to undertake maintenance and other duties.
“However, modern practices and processes may negate this need,” he said.
“It is a good suggestion to investigate extending the morning opening hours to alleviate the congestion experienced in the mornings.”
He agreed to investigate costs and practicality of the proposal.
The matter returned to council’s October 11 meeting, where it was unanimously voted in favour of extending the hours to the public for lap swimming, Learn to Swim and community group bookings only.
“It’s only for lap swimmers not for recreational use,” Mr Howard said.
Retiree and regular lap swimmer, Garry Phipps welcomed the decision, saying it was by far the best move council has made.
“It’s very forward thinking by the council,” he said.
“They can go one better and build an indoor heated pool.”
