A young girl and her mother have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after they were hit by a vehicle while out trick-or-treating for Halloween in Sydney's west.

Police say an adult learner-driver was behind the wheel of a white utility when the vehicle mounted the gutter and struck the girl, 8, and her mother, 27, in Jordan Springs about 6.45pm on Monday.
The circumstances of how the crash occurred are under investigation, but police said it appeared the female driver was attempting to turn from Lakeside Parade onto Greenwood Parkway when she lost control of her vehicle.

The ute hit the pedestrians before crashing into a car that was parked in the driveway of a house. The car was pushed into a garage roller door and damaged the front of the house.
The girl suffered a large cut to her head and was bleeding significantly when paramedics arrived. She was taken to The Children's Hospital at Westmead in a serious but stable condition, police said.
The girl's mother suffered pelvic injuries and was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The female learner-driver and her adult male supervising driver were not injured in the crash.
Officers from the Penrith Local Area Command and forensic officers examined the crash scene on Monday night and investigations are continuing.
