Parkes Bridge Club
Last Thursday we played a seven table Mitchell movement. The north south winners were Audrey and Gary Somers with a good score of 61.9 per cent. Second were Greig Ball and Keith Fiedler 60.1 followed by Fay Davis and Jeanette Jackson 50.9 and close behind were Jan Freeman and Fay Shaw 50 per cent.
On the east west side it was a battle between the Quin brothers with John and his partner Margaret Hawken topping with 57.4 and Peter and Louise Payne following with 55.1. Third on the day were Bev Laing and Isabel Orange 53 and Dawn Phipps and Vicki Burke 51.5. It's the best roll up we've had for some time.
Instead of playing on Monday night and Tuesday afternoon we had special lessons from one of the best in Australia. Joan Butts, from New Farm in Brisbane, is the Australian Bridge Federation's National Teaching Coordinator. In this role, she trains teachers all over Australia. She has played the game since she was 25 and has represented Australia in world championships.
Her passion is bridge education. She has taught thousands to play at the bridge club she has owned for 25 years. We had three sessions of tutoring on three different aspects of learning to play well whether as the declarer or the defenders of each hand. The sessions were well attended by our Parkes players as well as folk from Condobolin and Forbes. It was a great learning experience for most of us. Our special thanks must go to Ingrid Stephenson who managed to get Joan to come to Parkes and who organised the venues and the meals.
