Sheri Gae Wren
Sherie Gae Wren was born in Dubbo January 29, in 1947 and spent her early years on “Dunrovan” a small property owned by her parents, Ken and Betty Mills.
Sheri lived a simple life, experiencing the usual farm activities of those days, cows being milked, sheep tended, hens being fed and eggs collected, two lovely Clydesdales pulling a rudimentary plough and riding her first pony, Mickey. At 3 years old, Sheri began her schooling through Blackfriars correspondence schools, as Ballimore school was some distance away and travel was difficult back then.
Mum was our teacher and I’m sure we often tried her patience. Sheri always loved doing her lessons and excelled in virtually every academic area at a very early age. In 1954 we moved to Mogriguy, where Dad had another small farm and cut railway sleepers and Mum ran the village post office and store.
Moriguy school seemed very daunting at first, being in a large school room with 15 pupils ranging from kindergarten to sixth class. Sheri took to school like a duck to water and loved it so much that we spent most of our holidays playing schools. Later we were sent to board privately in Dubbo and attend South Dubbo primary school. Sheri adapted well and again excelled, achieving not only dux of the school, but also the much coveted position of school captain.
Dubbo high school followed and after considerable academic success, Sheri gained a scholarship to Mitchell College at Bathurst and realised her long held dream of becoming a primary school teacher, securing positions in various areas of Sydney, the Central Coast and the Central West for well over 30 years,
Sheri was tailor made for this vocation, relishing extra-curricular activities for her pupils such as swimming, dancing, exercise, band, music and singing classes. At one stage taking a group of children to sing at the Opera House. Indeed a very large feather in her cap.
Although Sheri had no children of her own, she was devoted to her pupils and had a real rapport with them. Teaching aside, she had many other talents, notably her extraordinary craft accomplishments, making all manner of items, in particular beautifully appliqued jumpers, and her wonderful clown dolls, which were admired by all who saw them. She was still making these for some months after moving into Cooee Lodge and sold quite a few of them. Sheri had a couple of breaks from teaching, briefly running a hobby farm near Parkes, which was open to the public and managing Suzanne Grae stores in Dubbo and Parkes.
She entered Cooee Lodge in 2007 and for a while continued her sewing and activities such as choir and exercise, being very proud that she could kick higher than anyone else.
At this stage I must give heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Cooee. From the start, they treated Sheri like one of the family and when that insidious disease, Alzheimer’s necessitated her move to high care, she was lavished with love, care and attention way above and beyond duty of care. So hats off to you, all you earth angels.
Sheri will be sadly missed by many people including yours truly and she will leave a large hole in my life. We will miss you darling, rest in peace.
