After hearing so many Forbes residents were being evacuated and an evacuation centre set up at Forbes High School, hotelier Matt Coleman turned to Facebook on Sunday night, September 25, to offer some relief.
He alerted his followers that the hotel had up to 20 rooms available that he could provide for free to any Forbes evacuees needing a roof over their head.
“For those who can travel through to Parkes and this offer could be of assistance during this testing time, please don't hesitate to contact us,” the post read.
The post has been shared 1821 times, has more than 3770 emoji reactions and almost 300 comments.
“I’d like to think someone would help us if we were in the same position,” Matt said.
“We have plenty of rooms here available.”
The idea to open the hotel’s doors to flood victims came about when Matt’s wife Cree, who’s nine months pregnant, wanted to go to Forbes to help fill sandbags.
“I was out of town at the time but I told her ‘you can’t go, you’re nine months pregnant’,” he said.
“So I thought, how can we help – we have the room for people needing a place to stay [and who may not necessarily want to stay in a busy evacuation centre.”
Four rooms have been occupied by Forbes residents and Matt said there are rooms still available until the end of next week for anyone still needing accommodation.
