The Chairman of the Lachlan Valley District Golf Associations Match Committee Steve Betland yesterday announced the district’s team to contest the Golf NSW Country Championships.

The championships will be played at the Goulburn Golf Club on the weekend of October 29 and 30.

Betland said that picking the team was a difficult decision and that some eight players had come under consideration, especially now that players had to contest several events away from their home club.

All players under consideration had to contest the annual Parkes Open Tournament.

The team announced includes three players from both Parkes and Forbes clubs with team containing brothers Steve and John Betland, and Lee Griersen of Forbes, and the Parkes trio of Justin Sutton, Mitch McGlashan and Cameron Butler, with Paul Thomas as manager.

All six players performed creditably at last week’s SCT Parkes Open Tournament.

Steve Betland took the title after a superb 2 under par round of 69 to head the strongest field ever assembled for the prestigious event and the remaining team members all excelled to finish in the top 10 on a course that played extremely difficult.

Meanwhile on the local scene the Parkes Golf Clubs match committee have advised players that the club has had to do some re-scheduling of programmed events due to the extremely wet conditions.

This weekend the men will play the washed out Telescope Tyres & Batteries September Monthly Medal for trophies generously provided by Tony Williams Chartered Accountants in A, B and C grades.

While Robert Cheney, Dave Stevenson, Peter Magill and Troy Thomson will sponsor the Veterans handicap division.

Griffins Leading Edge will sponsor the Putting competition.

The ladies will contest an 18 Hole Stroke competition for the 6th Club Medal with the Parkes Golf Shop as the sponsors.

Then on Sunday the ladies will play the 27 Hole Medlyn Bowl, while the men have the chance to travel to either the Condobolin or Dubbo Open Tournament, or they can play an 18 hole Stableford for a club trophy.

Finally the postponed Men’s and Ladies Foursomes Championships will both be played in October.

Men will play 18 Holes on consecutive Sundays, commencing on Sunday, October 9 and then the final round on Sunday, October 16.

Dixons Physiotherapy will be the sponsors, while the ladies will play their titles on the 16th over the demanding 27 Holes with Parkes Betta Electrical and Network Video as the sponsors.
