National Police Remembrance Day is one of the most important events on the NSW Police Force calendar.
It is a day where members of the NSW Police Force and the community remember those officers who have given their lives in the course of their duties.
In remembering the fallen officers from the NSW Police Force, also remembered are the fallen officers from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands.
Remembrance Day is also a time to remember both sworn and unsworn members of the NSW Police Force who lost their lives through illness, accident or other circumstances in the previous 12 months.
The National Police Memorial in Canberra
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the building and commemoration of the National Police Memorial in Canberra. The National Police Memorial was completed in 2006 carrying the names of all 719 Australian police officers who had given their lives in the line of duty up to that date.
Each officer is remembered by metal ‘touchstone’ inscribed with the officer's rank, name, jurisdiction and the place and date of death.
The names of officers killed in the preceding year are added at each National Police Remembrance Day Service.
