Byrne Demolition from Young was awarded the contract and will use all local machinery where possible.
John Byrne said it would take all day to bring down the building.
“It should be all down by tomorrow and we will cart the remains away on Monday and Tuesday,” he said.
As much of the building as possible will be recycled.
“The iron will be used as scrap metal, the bricks and concrete crushed and taken to Parkes landfill,” John said.
“Unfortunately there has been an astronomical amount of vandalism throughout the entire hospital so there is hardly a window that hasn’t been smashed or a door undamaged left to recycle.
“We only remove trees where it is absolutely necessary.”
All the asbestos was removed from the nurses quarters over the last couple of weeks and it was passed as safe to demolish.
Ongoing asbestos removal throughout the rest of the site is underway.
This is the 15th hospital the company have demolished.
“We smash trash and bash things. I get paid now for what I got into trouble for as a kid,” John said.
The more than 110 year old Parkes Hospital is expected to be fully demolished by Christmas.
