It was feared the branch would have no choice but close if they were unable to form a committee.

Declining member numbers and the increasing ages and health issues of current members and the executive have made the future of the branch uncertain.

Zone representative Sue Strahorn chaired the meeting. She congratulated outgoing president Zelma Fisher on her time in the role. 

“Zelma has done a wonderful job over the last three years,” Sue said.  No nominations were put forward for the president’s position as the election was called.

Sue told members that if no executive can be formed, the Parkes Red Cross may still be able to function as a club rather than a branch. 

Norma Oliver put herself forward for the role as president.

“I had no intention of standing, but I can’t stand back and watch us close,” Norma said.

“There are a couple of younger people who will become members and are keen to help me out.”

Of those present, no one was able to nominate another or themselves for any other executive position.

Sue said as they had elected a president, they would be able to form as a club. 

“I can see a few new faces here. If you are interested in become a member, once you have attended three meetings, you will be able to put yourself forward for any of the other executive positions,” she said.

Sue said with that in mind, in the future another full executive may be formed.

“We will be able to mentor our new members and help is always available from other branches.”

John Pocius (Regional Manager Greater Western) said the last thing anybody wants to see is the Parkes Branch of the Red Cross close after more than 100 years of helping the community.

“The role of Red Cross in the community is very important. This branch does exceptionally well and raises impressive funds from their weekly Friday morning teas,” he said.

“One thing I want to stress though, is you don’t have to do the same things you have been doing for years. If you feel you can no longer provide that service, you can raise funds by other means.”
