During the shutdown parts of Northparkes’ underground and ore processing operations are switched off to perform repairs, maintenance and upgrades.
Over the course of around ten days, hundreds of additional people are onsite to contribute 14,940 effort hours and complete the works.
That means there are an average of 83 extra people on site during each day and night shift until the end of July.
One of the major tasks being completed is the installation of a new girth gear.
A girth gear is a large ring fitted to the outside of a mill to provide its primary rotational drive.
Half of the girth gear has been installed so far, weighing 34 tonnes which is the equivalent of about 17 cars.
Northparkes has a focus on zero harm – the mines’ approach to every aspect of its operations including caring for its people, environment and community.
Today Northparkes has reached 99 days injury free, and everyone is working to continue this achievement throughout the shutdown and beyond.
