Professor Glover, the vice-chancellor of Western Sydney University, was appointed chairman of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences trust on Thursday.

Glover's appointment was announced on Thursday by the deputy premier and Arts Minister, Troy Grant.

It comes as the NSW government continues with its controversial plan to move the Powerhouse Museum to Parramatta and sell off its inner-city Ultimo site to property developers.

"Professor Glover knows and works in Western Sydney and has a long record of success in management and leadership in research and major capital development projects," Grant said in a statement.

But Greens MP Jamie Parker criticised the appointment of Glover, questioning his independence from government.

"The museum needs a genuinely independent chair who has the best interests of the institution at heart, rather than a political appointment who simply parrots the government's spin," he said.

Glover replaces John Shine, who endured criticism from opponents of the NSW government's plan to move the Powerhouse to Parramatta.

Glover joined the MAAS trust in January 2015 and is a staunch supporter of the proposed relocation of the museum to Parramatta.

"Clearly the board of trustees will be very deeply involved in the progress of Parramatta and we're excited by that," he said. "We're looking forward to the museum moving to Parramatta over the course of the next five to seven years."

Glover said he was looking forward to engaging with opponents of the relocation, who secured support last month for an Upper House inquiry into the move.

"I'm sure as details emerge of the museum that will be developed, I'm sure many of those concerns will be addressed," he said.

Glover said the premier, Mike Baird, and Grant were strongly behind the museum move "and I don't see that changing in the future".

He added: "I don't see a circumstance arising where I would be making public statements in relation to concerns with the government before I'd had a detailed opportunity to talk to the government to understand the circumstances."

South Sydney Rabbitohs chairman and former Powerhouse chairman Nick Pappas, who also opposes the museum's move, said he was troubled by the perception of bias surrounding Glover's appointment.

"I am troubled though by the fact that at a time when robust governance is required at the trust level of the museum under its charter, we have an appointment that effectively represents a western Sydney constituency," he said.

Pappas said he was disappointed by the MAAS board, which had failed to display robust independence from government.

"And I'm speaking as a former chair who contributed to what was then a very public debate about whether to merge the Powerhouse with the Australian [Museum]," he said.
