It is not known how long Mosman childcare centre Sally's Place, which charges up to $195 a day, will be closed.

Director Victoria Herbert declined to comment on the reasons behind the closure when contacted by Fairfax Media.

"It's a sticky situation," she said. "We are not open today. I don't know what's going on and I don't know what to say to people."

In an email to parents sent on Monday morning, Ms Herbert wrote that Sally's Place staff had not been paid for two weeks and would not return to work.

"Unfortunately I am writing to advise all parents that Sally's Place won't be operating starting Monday 18th July," she wrote.

"It came apparent over the weekend that no staff wages were paid for the previous fortnight and staff communicated that they would not be returning to work.

"As the nominated supervisor of the service we legally can't operate due to the lack of staff and therefore, we cannot comply with children-to-staff ratios."

She advised parents they would not be charged fees while the centre was closed.

She referred questions from Fairfax Media to owner Sally Lock who was not at the premises but has been contacted for comment.

Sally's Place is described as a "supportive and nurturing community, which involves the children, their families and caring educators" on its website.

It has been named as one of Sydney's priciest childcare centres, charging between $175 and $195 a day.

The centre was previously embroiled in a controversy involving the daughter of colourful politician Bob Katter.

Mr Katter's daughter Caroline Coupland faced court after an altercation with Sally's Place teacher Brooke Anderson.

Mrs Coupland was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond in 2012 and there was no conviction recorded against her.
