I have lived in Parkes since 1980, and was amazed about all the various organisations in the town that assisted folk in diverse ways, especially considering the size of the town.
One of the most well-known, of course, is the local Red Cross group.
They are renowned to be an international organisation that helps others who are suffering after experiencing a disaster, such as an earthquake or a hurricane.
Red Cross has been in existence since 1914, and is well-known for it’s out-reach to others in difficulties.
Every Friday, the volunteers open the doors to serve and sell an afternoon tea to anyone who passes by. In the past, the home-made treats that accompanied tea or coffee were made by other groups that took it in turn to support our local Red Cross group.
I have become very saddened to discover that the local group is in a situation where-by there may be a chance that the doors of the Red Cross building may be closed.
As with many other service organisations, the numbers of volunteers has become less than in past years, especially folks who are willing and able to become part of Red Cross, and to take up executive positions, such as president, secretary and treasurer.
I am writing to the Champion Post to ask the readers to consider joining the Red Cross, and even consider assisting by taking on one of the executive offices to facilitate the continuation of our local group.
I know times have changed, and there are many activities that are now available to townspeople.
But I hope that your readers will have a serious think about joining our local Red Cross group as a volunteer.
The AGM will be held on Tuesday, July 22, at 2pm, in the Red Cross Rooms.
They would be very grateful to anyone who would come along and join them, I am sure.

Reader not happy with new-look newspaper
Dear Editor
I would like to comment on your new-look Champion.
I think it’s terrible and stupid.
The print is too small for us older people, the layout of the classifieds in the small squares are stupid.
I’ve been buying the Champion for years and always found it easy to read, not no more.
Having talked to lost of my friends in my age group, 80 years plus, about the layout of the whole paper, we find it not suitable to us.
The print is terrible.
We will not be buying it in this form anymore.

Poem: ‘Winter’
Colour me sombre, a fog-shrouded dawning, Bathe me in mist, I be shining and new.
Sculpture me a landscape of crystal each morning, Spider-webs threaded with pearls of the dew.
Draw wide the curtain of grey that surrounds me, Awaken my senses, infuse me with light, Breathe in the calm of the aura that crowns me, Douse me in sunshine and colour me bright.
Pipe me the twitter of birds in the evening, Nestled in tree-tops or under the eaves, Clothe me in velvet, the shades of night deepening, Sing me the drip, drip of rain from the leaves.
Savour my moods in all their diversity, Wild as the waves that pound on the sand,
Bleak as the storm in raging hostility, Silent a dusk spreading over the land.
Take in your hands these gifts freely given you, For by my giving creation is blessed,
And paint me in soft muted colours, a view, Of nature asleep as the earth takes her rest.
