It acknowledges that our district was, is and will always be Wiradjuri Country.
Students, staff and the community had input into the design of the mural, with Parkes East Wiradjuri Language Tutor Ashlee McGrath completing concept drawings for Sauce and Sean to bring to life.
Every student and staff member at Parkes East will be assisting with the painting of the mural.
The mural consists of 23 panels with each class being responsible for one aspect of Parkes’ history.
Graincorp provided funds for the project through The Song Room, an organisation delivering high quality art and music programmes for disadvantaged school children throughout Australia.
Sauce and Sean represent Ub Ubbo Exchange, an international art group working with indigenous and non-indigenous artists in Central West NSW and overseas.
Graincorp has partially sponsored Ub Ubbo art projects and exchanges involving Sean and Sauce for a number of years.
Song Room drumming teacher Brianna Slattery has been working with Parkes East students and teachers for the past nine months.
Brianna’s third intensive drumming workshop coincided with the commencement of the mural.
Not only has Brianna conducted intensive workshops for students and staff but very popular parent/community drumming workshops were undertaken as well.
The entire school community is very appreciative of the support given by The Song Room in funding the drumming program as well as the mural project.
