This concerns me greatly as I believe this to be the most important choice we have ever had to make.
As I write, in the north of our country a huge portion of the Great Barrier Reef is bleached and dying, and in the south, in Tasmania, the lakes are empty and the hydro electricity has failed.
Temperatures are continuing to rise throughout the world – May was the hottest ever here in Australia – and there are huge storms doing horrendous damage up and down our eastern coast line right now.
Like most people I hoped that Malcolm Turnbull would be able to inspire his government to take real action, especially to alleviate the damage of climate change.
But it seems he has sold his soul to the devil and we just have an Abbott government with a prettier face.
The coalition continues to support the dying coal extraction industry while undermining renewable energy, which should be the way of our future.
I ask everyone who reads this letter to think very hard about this and to vote for the people, both in the lower house and especially in the senate, where we can all have some influence.
The people who will put the health of the planet and the future of our descendants and ourselves ahead of just jobs and growth, which sadly, these days, means the opportunity to make a quick buck and to hell with everything else.
