Cost of shipping the container is $15,000 and Parkes Shire Council instigated a public fundraising appeal in an attempt to reach the target.
At the most recent Council meeting, it was resolved (in the absence of Mayor Ken Keith who declared an interest and took no part in discussions) to make a donation of $5000 from the Section 356 Fund (donations).
(It was wrongly reported Council intended making a donation from funds raised in the GP Cup).
Earlier Cr Keith had tabled a Mayoral Minute regarding the East Timor Fundraising Appeal where he acknowledged the donation of $5000 from Forbes Shire along with $600 from the Assemblies of God Church and $1500 from the Parkes Services and Citizens Club.
“And in further good news, I can now announce that the Parkes Rotary Club has also donated $1000,” Cr Keith said.
“Linfox and Gary Potts have kindly donated $3500 in the form of packing and transporting the container to the Port of Sydney.
“Don McLeod has also generously allowed his Austop buildings to be utilised for the storage and packing of goods from the Parkes and Forbes Hospitals.”
Cr Keith also informed councillors that the Welcome congregation of the Parkes Uniting Church had generously donated $5000 towards additional medical items to supplement the surplus hospital stock.
“They have also donated another $5000 to help this year’s Mission Team achieve their objectives including the installation of a new bore and fencing of the Medical Centre at Weberek,” Cr Keith said.
“Plans are to pack the container after it is delivered by Gary Potts.
“Volunteers have kindly donated their time and have sorted and labelled the items in preparation for the shipment.
“At this stage, the container will be dispatched to the depot at St Peters (Sydney) Friday, June 17, for shipping out on Tuesday, June 21.”
Council resolved to acknowledge all contributors with letters to be sent to the Assemblies of God Church, Forbes Shire Council and Parkes Services Club.
