Delivering her closing arguments, prosecutor Nanette Williams told the court a series of inconsistencies as well as "one very disturbing consistency" were at the heart of a lie concocted by the officers after Sergeant Sheree Bissett shot dead the 36-year-old in the kitchen of his father's Lakemba home on November 18, 2009.

"The various accounts of the accused do not sit easily with each other. They do not align on basics and fundamental aspects of the evidence," Ms Williams said before Judge Greg Woods, who is hearing the case as a judge-alone trial.

Sergeant Bissett and her fellow officers, Sergeant Emily Metcalfe, Senior Constable Leah Wilson and Constable Aaron Abela, are accused of giving false evidence to the 2012 Police Integrity Commission inquiry into Mr Salter's death. They have each pleaded not guilty to the charges and none of them gave evidence in the present trial.

Ms Williams told the court the officers had a window of four to 10 minutes after Mr Salter had been shot, to concoct their story.

In this period of time, Sergeant Bissett and Constable Metcalfe were seen talking and smoking on the footpath opposite the Salters' home, while Mr Abela and Ms Wilson were also seen together on the front porch, Ms Williams said.

"No one had told them to stop talking about it and no one had separated them."

She said all four officers "got their heads together" to concoct the story that Mr Abela had attempted to restrain Mr Salter before he was shot but, because they didn't have the luxury of time or privacy, "critical detail was ad-libbed", resulting in inconsistencies in their evidence.

Their accounts were refuted as lies by the Crown, which has centred its case on the evidence by Adam's father, Adrian Salter, as well as ambulance officers, that Constable Abela was stationary on the other side of the kitchen when Adam was shot.

The court heard Sergeant Bissett claimed Constable Abela was "struggling" with Mr Salter who had lunged towards him.

Though she yelled "Taser, Taser, Taser" before firing her gun, she maintained she deliberately shot Mr Salter because she believed he intended to stab Constable Abela.

However, Ms Williams characterised Sergeant Bissett's account as "glaringly different" from the account Constable Abela gave to the Police Integrity Commission where he described his contact with Adam as "just an instantaneous reaction reaction where my arm just came out to stop him".

Constable Abela's evidence that he grabbed Adam's left arm in two places – just above his elbow with his right hand, and just below his elbow with left – was also at odds with Ms Wilson's account who testified to seeing "Mr Abela's right hand on Adam's shoulder", she said.

It also diverged with Constable Metcalfe's version in which she claimed Constable Abela was holding Adam around his "upper torso" on his left-hand side "but couldn't say exactly where".

The Crown tore into Constable Metcalfe's choice of "deliberately vague" words as an attempt to avoid locking herself "into a version which may quickly be exposed as a lie".

"For a trained and experienced police officer, those words don't ring true," Ms Williams said.

Ms Williams also highlighted the "consistency of omission" between the officers' accounts, in which they make no mention of Adrian Salter's attempts to stop his son stabbing himself moments before he is shot.

"Not one police officer put Mr Adrian Salter in the room" because to do so would expose the lie within their evidence to the Police Integrity Commission that it was Constable Abela who had attempted to restrain Adam," she said.

Adrian Salter's contrary claim – that no one had attempted to restrain his son –was consistent with the evidence of the ambulance officers who were also in the room when Sergeant Bissett fired her gun.

"The combination of that evidence clearly gives the lie to the police accounts," Ms Williams said.

The police officers' barristers will begin their closing submissions before Judge Woods on Wednesday.
