Maintaining traditional marriage is the most important election issue for the entire country, including Eden-Monaro, Christian Democratic Party candidate Ursula Bennett says.

"People keep talking about the economy and that we've got to throw money at this or that, but I believe if we get our relationships right and how it works best for children ... we can solve a lot of the problems they think we can solve with money."

Bennett says that, as a rural area, transport and youth unemployment are always concerns for Eden-Monaro.

"I tend to approach things a lot differently to what you expect a normal politician to do because I believe in a minimalist view of government, both in the financial and law way. If we can simplify the law as much as we can and let people take up their responsibilities in communities, then I think you'll find it very flourishing and thriving."

She denies a minimalist approach to government is at odds with the party's opposition to marriage equality.

"We're not interfering with people's relationships, what we're doing is maintaining an external law; like mathematics is an external law, I can't make up the rules of mathematics. Marriage is a predetermined, pre-existing rule under which we all have equality.

"As a female. I have the same right as every other female of marriageable age to marry a male. The only restriction ... is that you have a male and female who can produce life with the least amount of intervention."

Bennett says a national service scheme for young people, in either the military or with environmental or aid volunteering, could help them gain skills while they are still at home.

"Often our children have to leave and go to the city to find work or study. That could bridge that gap and be a great benefit to the community as volunteer numbers are dropping down and give an incentive and motivation for young people to volunteer."

She hopes her party will adopt the policy.

Bennet also wants to see less financial waste and jurisdictional overlap, particularly with the distribution of GST funds and allocation of resources like electricity.

The veteran CDP Eden-Monaro candidate, who ran in the 2004 and 2010 elections, says her main aim of contesting the bellwether seat is to give electors an option to vote for unchanging Christian values, but she admits it will be a "miracle" if she wins.

"Our party will never change its mind on marriage. We might change our mind on tax policy or even immigration ... but for the right to life from conception to natural death, we'll never change our mind."
