Despite this, in a very determined effort they went within a whisker of victory against the high-flying Wombats, narrowly going down 16-12.

Coby Bruce added the extras for 7-3 after 16 minutes.

Mudgee hit back with a converted try of their own soon after in what was proving a very evenly matched contest.

Neither side could gain the ascendancy as the teams headed to the sheds with no further addition to the scoreboard.

Despite rain settling in when play resumed, Parkes dominated proceedings early, but were unable to convert their opportunities.

A superb individual effort from Israel Symington had the Boars back to within a point.

Mudgee were unable to contain the big forward as he ran 60 metres to score for 13-12.

Another penalty goal, going in off the post, saw Mudgee out to 16-12 with 15 minutes remaining.

The Boars pressured the home side’s line, but were unable to capitalise as the Wombats held on for a four point win.

Symington was best for the Boars, ably supported by Nick Westcott in what was predominantly a good team effort.

The Boars now have two weeks off with a bye and then a general bye for the long weekend.
