The first flight out of the new multi-million facility took place at 5pm on Tuesday.
The Parkes region is set to boast considerable benefits from the airport redevelopment.
The new terminal has been designed for the future, with the ability to house security screening and a two gate access system.
A large public space has been incorporated for flexibility and for passenger comfort.
The terminal has been designed with accessibility and technology in mind, with new amenities and wireless NBN being installed for passengers.
The upgrade to the terminal is part of the $3 million redevelopment of Parkes Regional Airport which is jointly being funded by Parkes Shire Council, the Australian Government, through their Community Development Grants Programme, and the New South Wales Government Community Partnership Grant.
The work at the airport also includes a new entry way, new runway lighting, connection of potable water (all of which are complete), and increased parking facilities.
Parkes Shire councillors and staff were given a tour of the project this week.
Parkes Shire Councillor and Chair of the Airport Committee, Alan Ward said he and his fellow councillors were most impressed with the terminal upgrades and delighted to witness the first flight from the new terminal.
“It was an exciting time in Parkes' history to witness this flight, and an exciting time for our region with a strong focus on continued economic development and investment,” he said.
“Thank you to our Federal and State Governments for their significant contributions.
“Thank you also to the Parkes Aero Club for allowing council to use their club house as a temporary terminal while the work was taking place.
“Council would also like to thank REX and their local staff and management for their assistance during the temporary terminal period.
“Community members and travellers should also be praised for their patience throughout the upgrade.
“Passenger demand for services from Parkes Airport has grown from 8,000 passengers a year to over 30,000 passengers in a 10year period, so this upgrade is important in keeping our airport a strategic regional infrastructure asset,” Cr Ward added.
The official opening of the airport project will be confirmed in the coming months.
