Cr Keith, who also holds the title of Chair of the Newell Highway Taskforce, and Mr Gee were joined by representatives of the NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) for the turning of the first sod at Trewilga for a major upgrade to the Newell Highway.
The $36 million dollar project is to realign the highway as part of the State Government’s Newell Highway Corridor Strategy.
In his address to those present, Cr Keith thanked Duncan Gay (NSW Minister for Roads and Freight) for the ‘significant investment.”
“It is not only pleasing to our shire from a road safety perspective but also a feather in the hat of the Newell Highway Taskforce for our consistent and relevant lobbying to see major sections of the corridor improved,” Cr Keith said.
“The Newell is the longest highway in NSW and this particular section here at Trewilga sees a truck pass through every minute, set to double by 2030.
“It’s great to see such significant investment and infrastructure within our shire and the state which will result in more efficient and safe movement of freight and domestic travel.”
Mr Gee announced that Haslin Constructions Pty Ltd had been awarded to major work tender for the 6.5 kilometre realignment - between Parkes and Peak Hill.
“Trewilga is the only rural section of the Newell Highway between Forbes and Gilgandra where the speed limit is 100 km/h and not 110 km/h.
“However, once this work is completed the speed limit will be raised to 110 km/h,” Mr Gee said
“This project will involve building a new 3.2 kilometre alignment, widening the traffic lanes and sealed shoulders, providing a 1.3 kilometre northbound overtaking lane, a truck parking area on the eastern side of the highway, and a bus turning area at Kadina Road.”
Mr Gee said work is expected to start later this month and is due for completion in March 2018.
