A woman has suffered serious burns to her upper body in an explosion at a public school on the NSW Central Coast.

The woman suffered burns to her chest, neck and face when a gas bottle attached to a barbecue exploded at Holgate Public School at Holgate about 10.30am on Friday.
The woman, who paramedics said was aged in her early 40s, was believed to be the parent of a student at the school.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman confirmed paramedics were called to a property on Wattle Tree Road to treat a woman with burns to her upper body.
A rescue helicopter landed at a nearby oval, and the woman was flown to the Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.
The woman was in a stable condition, the ambulance spokesman said.
