A man, who claimed he was shot in the finger by road rage attackers in Sydney's west, concocted the story to cover up the fact that he injured himself, police believe.

When police searched his home in Smith Street, Regents Park, on Thursday, they allegedly found two semi-automatic pistols, a hunting rifle, a revolver frame, about 800 rounds of ammunition, a bowie knife and $11,500 in cash.
The Regents Park man, 28, was arrested and charged with making a misleading statement, hindering police and a slew of weapons offences, including possessing a prohibited weapon without a permit, possessing a loaded firearm in a public place and discharging a loaded firearm in a public place.
The man allegedly claimed he was driving behind a black Audi sedan on Joseph Street, Regents Park, on Tuesday when it stopped suddenly, causing him to stop his car - a white Lexus sedan - directly behind it.
The man then allegedly told officers he became involved in an argument with two men who were travelling in the Audi.
He allegedly said that one of the men pointed a firearm at him.
When he responded by trying to grab hold of the gun, he sustained a gunshot wound to his finger, he allegedly told police.
He was taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment.
The man was refused bail. He will appear before Burwood Local Court on Friday.
