It’s a 1965 AP6 Valiant Wayfarer – the AP signifying “Australian Production” and the word Wayfarer meaning “go far”.
Brian’s had the ute for about 20 years, having bought it in already restored condition.
It has the original colours of white on the outside with green interior which Brian has had re-upholstered.
Engine wise the AP6 has the unique 225 slant six motor coupled to a 3 speed manual column shift transmission (“3 on the tree”).
In its day the AP6 sold for 1059 pounds ($2118).
It was praised by the media as quiet and powerful with Valiant Australia touting fuel economy figures as good as 11.8 km/L on country roads.
Brian can attest to that.
He keeps his ute on full registration to use when he likes and after owning other Valiants in the past, says that this one has been the most reliable.
A total of 43,344 AP6 Valiants were built in the day (March 1965 – March 1966).
At the peak of production at the Chrysler plant in Tonsley Park (S.A.) Valiant Australia claimed to be producing 200 cars (sedans, wagons and utes) off the production line in an eight hour shift - and still not able to meet demand such was the popularity of the AP6.
Brian enjoys getting his AP6 ute out regularly for club runs with the CWCC and has even been known to bring his three year old Labrador “Ted” along for the ride.
If anybody would like to find out more about the CWCC you are welcome at their regular meetings on the first Wednesday of the month at Parkes Leagues Club or look us up at www.centralwestcarclub.com .
The CWCC Annual Charity Show and Shine will be at Pioneer Oval once again this year on Saturday, October 17.
It will feature loads of beautifully restored, original and customised cars and bikes including a few elite level cars.
Mark it in your diary and come along to join us for a great day.
