Despite CYMS reversing that result last year, the Spacemen set the record straight by defeating them for the first time in a grand final in 2013 and will hope to replicate those exploits when they take on the Fishies again this Sunday.
Before the epic win, CYMS had defeated the Spacemen on four occasions, amazingly by a mere 13 points.
By four in 1969, three in 1971, four in 2009 and by two on Pioneer Oval in 2011.
Inspired by former Wallaby Ken McMullen who dropped field goals all day against Alan Jones’ unbeaten Spacemen, CYMS won 16/12 in a 1969 boil-over.
Two years later CYMS won 23/20 again on Pioneer Oval, against the Graham Kennedy coached Spacemen, who won in 1972 and 1973.
The 2009 decider in Dubbo went to CYMS 26/22 in the final minute, while CYMS overcame a 16/6 half-time deficit to beat Parkes 22/20 on Pioneer Oval three years ago, a memory the Spacemen erased with their emphatic win in 2013.
The Fishies bounced back with a 34-20 win last season after the Spacemen came from fifth place to make the decider.
CYMS have been the dominant force in Group 11 since 2000, winning eight of the 15 titles, ahead of Macquarie (three), Parkes (two), and Narromine and Cobar (one each).
CYMS have secured 12 first grade titles ahead of Narromine (10) with Parkes in equal third place with Dubbo Macquarie after both sides have nine first grade titles since Group 11 re-established in 1946 under its present format.
Eugowra won five consecutive first grade titles between 1963 and 1967 and CYMS won four on the trot between 2001 and 2004.
Only three clubs – Parkes (1954), CYMS (1971) and Macquarie (1979) have won three titles in the one season.
Parkes enjoys a proven and enviable record in Group 11 in its 68 years history, with nine premierships in first grade, nine in reserves and eight in juniors.
Hopes are high that the record will be further enhanced by 4pm this Sunday after they battle CYMS at Caltex Oval, Dubbo.
