A two-year-old girl has died and her baby brother has been critically injured when the car they were passengers in crashed off the New England Highway and rolled in rural NSW.

The children's mother, who was driving the car, remains in hospital in a stable condition following the crash near Willow Tree, about 55 kilometres north of Scone, at 7pm on Monday.
Police said the the woman was driving her sedan north on the highway when her vehicle rolled and crashed down an embankment by the side of the road about four kilometres north of Willow Tree
A passing motorist who saw the wreckage stopped and tried to help the family. The motorist found the body of a two-year-old girl in the vehicle, and her 11-month-old brother with critical head injuries.
Police, paramedics and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter were called to the scene, and the critically injured baby was flown to John Hunter Hospital.
His mother was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital, where she was in a stable condition on Tuesday morning, police said.
Crash investigators from Tamworth closed the New England Highway at the crash scene overnight while they tried to determine the cause of the single-vehicle crash. The highway re-opened just after 5am on Tuesday.
