Currently experiencing an influx of major infrastructure development (including projects such as the $72.5million Parkes Hospital redevelopment, and proposed $50million Newell Highway heavy vehicle bypass), combined with a Gross Regional Product of approximately $1 billion, contributed to by a diverse range of industries, Parkes' economic and social landscape continues to mature.
The development of the Inland Rail, providing a direct freight rail connection from Melbourne to Brisbane via regional New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, with intermodal hubs such as Parkes (NSW) presents incredible opportunity not only for the further development of Parkes, and regional Australia but the whole of Australia
It is for this reason that Parkes continues to lobby for the fast-tracking of this nation building infrastructure.
Parkes Mayor, Ken Keith this week launched the latest string in the bow to keep the Inland Rail project on the radar of government and investors.
Cr Keith is attending a Transport and Logistics Symposium in Toowoomba, and has delivered a presentation on how local government is working together across New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland to keep the Inland Rail implementation commitment high on the national agenda.
“The Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail has federal government bipartisan support, but needs further investment,” the Mayor said.
“As chair of the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail Alliance, we continue to ensure that this project is given the high priority status that it deserves.”
The finale to Cr Keith's presentation at the symposium is the launch of an Inland Rail video (which will simultaneously go live on YouTube), outlining the importance of the project and highlighting the strategic location of Parkes in the network.
“Getting the road and rail interaction right will increase freight productivity, efficiency and open up regional products to domestic and international markets.
“Which is why the inland rail and intermodal solutions, such as the Parkes National Logistics Hub are so important and need investment,” Cr Keith said.
Parkes Shire Council has produced a video targeted to government and investors cementing the need for the Inland Rail, and emphasising the benefits that the project will deliver to the economy and communities along the route, such as Parkes.
