Stefanie Loader, Managing Director of CMOC-Northparkes Mines and Andrew Gee MP, local state Member for Orange, have teamed up to encourage and promote the work of outstanding women in the central west.
They hosted a media launch last week at Mr Gee’s office in Orange to encourage women to nominate for the Australian Financial Review (AFR) and Westpac 100 Women of Influence Awards, and offer mentoring opportunities for women who decide to nominate.
“I think women still need a leg up - hopefully we won’t need these awards in the future, but the platform is not as big as it could be,” Stefanie said.
“I’m passionate about setting an example because, as I go through my career, I look around for role models and think I need to create my own because I’m very proud of being a miner, I’m very proud of being a mum, and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved in my career.”
Stefanie was one of the 100 Women of Influence in 2013, and, in 2014 mentored several central west women through the nomination process, including Jan Savage of Cancer Care Western NSW, and Ellie Brown of the NSW Business Chamber.
Jan won the philanthropy category and Ellie went on to make the list of 100 women and was a finalist in the local/regional category.
Jan advocated for community partnership in order to respond to inequities faced by rural Australia.
“We have a very diverse rural population separated by vast geographical miles, so the way to overcome those lack of services is by communities working in partnerships.”
“We’re entering an era now where the government can’t supply everything that we need,” she said.
Mr Gee supported Jan’s promotion of women in the Central West.
“That’s one of the key points that Jan raised during the awards process, people were interested in what’s actually happening over the great divide,” he said.
Lyn Hanes, President of Quota Orange, gave her support to the awards and sad “there are so many women in the Central West working quietly for the betterment of their communities who deserve recognition”.
Attendees at the launch were Andrew Gee MP, Stefanie Loader, Jan Savage and Lyn Haynes.
Nominations close August 9. More information is available here. http://www.100womenofinfluence.com.au/
