In a hectic five hours, His Excellency officially opened Moat Cottage, cut the celebration cake in honour of Sir Henry Parkes’ 200th birthday, met participants in the Australian Town Crier Championships, toured the Henry Parkes complex, attended a civic luncheon, launched a book by Lex and June Weaver, toured the National Logistics Hub, officially opened the Memorial Hill rejuvenations before finally launching the 2015 Paint the Town REaD - Poppies program by reading a story book to captivated children.
Sir Peter apologised for the absence of his wife Lady Lynne Cosgrove who regretted having to cancel her visit at the last minute.
At all functions His Excellency endeared himself to all present with his friendly and informal approach to the day’s proceedings.
He was more than happy to pose for countless photographs, shake hands and meet as many people as he could during his visit.
Mayor Ken Keith welcomed His Excellency to what he described as `the friendliest town in Australia’ which proudly boasts the name of the Father of Federation.
