Guests from New South Wales Floral Art Association travelled from Taree, Bowral, Canberra, all parts of Sydney and the Blue Mountains to attend, as well as West Wyalong, Canowindra, Forbes and surrounding areas.
Official proceedings were opened by Councillor Ken McGrath who warmly welcomed everyone and spoke of how proud the council is of the local craft groups in our community.
He remembered when the late Kay Maxwell, one of the driving forces of the Parkes Floral Art Society, taught the art at Parkes TAFE.
President Shirley Hunter was unable to attend, so publicity officer Colleen Cusack stood in and gave a small history on the trophy for the late Kay Maxwell and the Betty and Aleks Muzyczuk Memorial Award.
Kay Maxwell’s daughter Carla Rauchle was present with her daughter Brandi to make the presentation.
Secretary Ann Crasti introduced NSW President of Floral Art Mary Sweeney who congratulated the Parkes group for the magnificent display of some 65 entries.
She then demonstrated some of the latest trends in floral design for the appreciative crowd.
Her creations were later raffled with some happy winners.
Afternoon tea was served and did not disappoint.
In the morning, whilst judging was taking place, visitors were treated to tours of two local gardens belonging to Bill Skinner and Faye and Kelvie Blackstock.
The society thanks their hosts.
On Saturday night members gathered at the Parkes International Motel for dinner and a cake made and iced by Jan Ranger was cut.
President Shirley Hunter presented ‘Mrs Elsie Mahon Special Awards’ to treasurer Jan Ranger and publicity officer Colleen Cusack.
