Some 40 villagers and local community members attended the information session which was described by attendee Mrs Barbara Guppy as being very informative.
“I learnt a lot about the risk factors that can lead to falls. It was a very worthwhile session indeed,” Mrs Guppy said.
The session commenced with Rebecca Evans (Clinical Nurse Specialist Aged Care), using a powerpoint presentation for her address titled ‘Don’t let confusion cloud your risk of falls.’
Her main message focused on the fact delirium and frailty are not simply consequences of ageing.
The day provided those present the opportunity to meet with professionals in the area of aged care, community occupational therapy, physiotherapy, a medical student from CSU as well as health lifestyle staff.
Of those present, 12 people joined the list to take part in the Stepping On - a seven week falls prevention program run by Cheryl Uptin (physio therapist assistant), three Occupational Therapist home assessments organised, whilst everyone was given a Stay Active and On Your Feet pamphlet and fridge magnet of exercises produced by NSW Health.
An open discussion took place regarding the many and varied falls scenario - conducted by locals and then health professionals the common risk factors.
Many people also accepted pamphlets on Tai Chi and spoke to representatives from Meals on Wheels, College for Seniors, local line dance instructor and staff from the Southern Cross Village.
The session concluded with a cuppa and morning tea hosted by Southern Cross.
