Parkes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said the double demerit point period would commence tomorrow and conclude on Monday (April 6).
“Double demerit points will apply to all speeding, seatbelt and helmet offences this Easter holiday period,” Ms Suitor said.
“Please note that tomorrow (Thursday, April 2) is a gazetted school day, therefore double demerit points will apply to all relevant school zone offences committed on that day.
“Police enforcement figures show that double demerit points do deter motorists from speeding and not wearing their seatbelt/helmet when roads are at their busiest.
“Drivers should be warned they are at greatest risk of losing their licence during this period.
“There will be more Police on the roads and therefore more chance of getting caught and losing points.
“I ask all drivers to remain vigilant over the Easter holiday period,” Ms Suitor said.
“We all have a part to play in reducing the amount of crashes and risks.
“Remember to slow down, schedule plenty of breaks during your trip, limit distractions in the car, don’t drink and drive and ensure all your passengers are wearing their seatbelts,” Ms Suitor said.
There will not be a double demerit point period for Anzac Day 2015, as there is no long weekend.
