It is the first public appearance the actress and mother of six has made since an operation to remove her ovaries less than two weeks ago.

Daughters Zahara, 10, and Shiloh, 8 accompanied their mother to the Kid's Choice Awards on Saturday where she was nominated for Favourite Movie Actress and Favourite Villain, for her role in Maleficent.

The actress lost the award for Favourite Movie Actress to Emma Stone, but won Favourite Villain.

Photos from the award's ceremony show Zahara and Shiloh leaping in delight, as their mother is announced as the winner, and throwing their arms around her.

In her inspiring acceptance speech, the 39-year-old opened up about not fitting in as a child.

"When I was a kid I was told - like Maleficent - that I was different," the Oscar-winning actress said. "And I felt out of place - too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in.

"But then I realised something: different is good. So maybe you don't fit in. Be yourself. And when someone tells you that you are different just smile and hold your head up, and be proud.

"And, as your villain, I would also say cause a little trouble - it's good for you."

Last week, the actress wrote about her decision to remove her ovaries, in an op-ed for the New York Times.

"It is not easy to make these decisions," she wrote.

"But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power."
