Peter Nong, 28, was caught in the possession of a 12-gauge sawn-off shotgun and a loaded rifle with scope, as well as several other cartridges of ammunition.

The firearms were found  when Mr Nong was being arrested on a domestic violence charge related to an alleged assault against his wife, Van Nguyen.

Police said that while preparing to move interstate, Mr Nong and his wife were staying at the accused's mother's residence in Ambarvale, where they were going  to store most  of their belongings.

It was there that a domestic incident allegedly occurred between Mr Nong and his wife, who called the police, saying her husband   had abused her and made death threats.

This incident followed another alleged incident the previous day at what had been their home in Canley Vale.

After Mr Nong was apprehended, Mrs Nguyen allegedly told police she had seen him  with firearms in the past.

Searching the family's possessions in the mother's garage, the police allegedly found the weapons.

The rifle was allegedly reported stolen from Macquarie Fields in 2005 and  the shotgun was not on the firearm registry. Mr Nong has never held a firearm licence.

He later allegedly told police he bought the firearms in a street deal.

Police said he denied he wanted to kill anyone else, but rather wished to kill himself. Mr Nong had only recently discovered his mother allegedly received $90,000 to arrange the marriage of Mr Nong and Mrs Nguyen some three years prior, something that had greatly upset him.

At Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, it was heard that a strong prosecution case, including an admission by Mr Nong, made a long custodial sentence likely.

Bail was refused and Mr Nong, who has also been placed on suicide watch, will appear at Campbelltown Local Court on March 17.
