And the price easily trumps the extra $100,000 announced this month by the NSW Coalition government to confront the sheep predators in the state's south-east.

Bill Brewis, his brother and their families farm about 7500 hectares near Dalgety and have had to plan their land use around the vermin.

"It's probably cost our family $250,000 in damages in the last five years – in killing, lost production and time you put in," Mr Brewis said.

"We took the decision in 2011 to shift [sheep] out of two properties, two blocks, to save them getting killed.

"Sheep are twice as profitable as cattle, and you can't run your farm as you'd like to."

Even with the stock movement, 100-150 sheep have been lost in the last year as the dogs trespass across the 10-kilometre border the Brewis' holdings share with the Kosciuszko National Park.

Mr Brewis said seeing the cruel results of the dog attacks – as conscious sheep are left with back legs torn and innards hanging out – was the most difficult aspect.

The problem was worse than a decade ago and the baiting, which in NSW occurs both via air and ground, was ineffective, he said.

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council mayor Dean Lynch said the psychological hit could be as difficult as the financial cost.

"One of the major issues, beside the cost, is coming across stock that has been maimed: when you spend your whole 12 months looking after those stock, it's heartbreaking."

"For farmers it's something they can't control and it's so very disheartening."

Mr Lynch said any extra funding was welcome, although there were concerns it would get chewed up quickly by bureaucracy.

West of Canberra, Wee Jasper landholder John Palmer said there were ongoing problems with wild dogs, with neighbours reporting lost sheep in the last 12 months, although a local wild dog management program had lowered the threat from a decade ago.

Earlier this month NSW Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson announced the extra funding for the state's wild dog management program, with the majority to be spent on improved strategic trapping and baiting programs.

The project, executed by government Local Land Services officers, National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers and landholders, will also include a better reporting system, Ms Hodgkinson said.

Labor MP Steve Whan said the wild dogs – which cost Australian livestock industries an estimated $50 million annually – had been handled better in the past.
