“This has been four years in the planning, both for the logistics of the actual trip as well as organising the time off work and of course the funds,” Gerry said.
Accompanying Gerry on the adventure is semi-Trundle local Dwayne Minch.
Dwayne, who is an engineer and mechanic by trade, has been the driving force in the design and modification of the motorbikes being used.
“The original bikes were designed for soft adventure touring, but we have spent a lot of time and effort to make them suitable for our purposes,” Dwayne said.
The modifications include long range tanks, heavy duty panniers [bags], driving lights, a custom designed and made metal fairing and dash to name a few.
During the trip, Gerry and Dwayne are hoping to use any interest in their voyage to raise awareness and money for the Royal Far West, a charity that addresses the inequities between medical interventions for rural children.
“The Royal Far West is a charity which is active within our region, helping our local children to reach their academic potential by removing any medical obstacles which may impede them,” Gerry said,
“They are active in our local area assisting our children and this makes a massive difference in the future of these children.”
The pair only organised for themselves and the bikes to arrive into Buenos Aires in late January.
From there, they only have a very rough idea of what they are going to do.
Their first objective is to get to Ushuaia, which is as far south as you ride a motorbike not including Antarctica.
This first part of their trip will cover a distance of roughly 3500kms.
“We need to get there as soon as possible as the summer is drawing to a close and temperatures will start to plummet, which is not ideal,” Dwayne stressed.
From there the two bikers will head north into Chile where they intend to take a course in Spanish to assist the rest of their time in South America.
Gerry will be sending monthly updates of their trip, or you can follow them and donate to the Royal Far West on their website, www.threethumbstravel.com.
