NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley has announced that, if elected in March, he will continue the current moratorium on the sale of Lottery products at outlets run by large corporate monopolies.
The moratorium is due to expire in early April but the Baird government has so far refused to commit to an extension.
The reluctance of Mr Baird and his government to commit has been cause for widespread concern on the part of newsagents and small business sub-agencies.
Small business newsagents and sub-agency owners face the loss of a significant revenue stream if the sale of lottery products is gifted to larger monopoly traders.
Mr Fitzsimon said Mr Foley has once again demonstrated that he is well and truly tuned in to the wants, needs and desires of small business and the community in NSW.
“Newsagencies and small business sub agencies are at the beating heart of our rural and regional communities,” Mr Fitzsimon said.
“They are social as well as commercial centres out here.
“This is a great job retention and small business protection initiative by Mr Foley.
“We’ve lost enough jobs in the regions under the Baird government.
“I would hate to see these small businesses go under due solely to inaction by the Baird government and their desire to satisfy their corporate overlords.
“Unfortunately, out here in the bush, our National members appear to be well and truly tuned in to the corporate channel.
“Perhaps its time they switched to community radio instead,’’ Mr Fitzsimon said.
