We won't really know until all available evidence is sifted and to find out how to avoid horrible tragedies like this in the future.

So many people died in such a short time this year. I hope this slows down.
Serhan facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Awful. Just awful.
Jessica facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
The freak weather event is in line with extreme weather events of higher intensity as forecast in climate change scenarios. We are living the era of a new climatic condition that won't be fun so we might need to fly less to avoid that risk and avoid emissions!
Desiree facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
So sad, but miraculous in recovering some of the passengers. Credit to the Indonesian armed forces for the respect and dignity shown to the deceased.
Nikkii facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
The respect being paid to the fallen by the Indonesian armed forces is really wonderful.
Jeff facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Plane should not of left in severe weather there is a thing called cancellation! And still no one has explained why the flight time was changed passengers have a right to know every detail about a plane they are going to board saying business as usual means nothing for those poor souls. How terrifying it must of been. Condolences to their families and friends may they RIP.

ARE THE FIREWORKS WORTH IT ON NEW YEAR'S EVE?
For one year I'd like Sydney to donate the millions for the fireworks to disease research or the homeless. Something charitable.
Michael facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Another night terrorising birds and animals!
Diana facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Seen one fireworks display you've seen them all!
Nicholas facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
A years worth of carbon in eighty seconds!
Dave facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Show of beauty, sometimes we need to celebrate and what better way than lighting up the skyline of a very pretty city. Happy New Year people, let's hope it's a good one.
Frida facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
It is good for the economy and well being. It amaze me, someone reckoning it is a waste of money. Fun and celebration should go hand in hand with social services. Helping the poor and the homeless, and fireworks celebration are not mutually exclusive. These are funded and sponsored by donors, and suggesting that it should be spent in social services instead is not going to happen.
Cesar facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
People missing the point. The cost of the display is piffle compared to what tourists drag into the economy of Sydney during the season.
David facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Sorry to sound like a curmudgeon but aren't fireworks a bit "been there, done that ". Isn't the harbour beautiful in itself?
Anthony facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Sydney's NYE fireworks are famous all around the world. I have been in far flung parts of the world to then see Sydney showcasing herself in NYE and never felt prouder.
Denise facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Seven million dollars for 12 minutes of smoke. Total waste!
Margo facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
It brings in lots of tourist dollars. I would say it's money well spent for NSW.
Helen facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Sydney never fails to deliver a NYE spectacular.
Karen facebook.com/sydneymorningherald
Looks totally beautiful after the awful year we have all been through. Money is not everything, some much needed joy was worth the expense.

Josh: Sydneysiders worried about trams, something Melbourne has had for years with relatively few issues. True genius, folks. *facepalm*
