The driver, 31, was parked in a black Nissan Infinity sedan on Campbell Parade, about 20 metres north of Notts Avenue, about 11.35pm on Sunday.

A man approached the car and demanded the driver get out, police said.

The attacker threatened to stab the driver if he did not comply.

The man punched the driver several times in the face before pulling him out of the car.

He dragged the driver to the rear of the car where he assaulted him again and threw him to the ground.

The attacker tried to drive off but was unable to do so and ran away.

The driver was not taken to hospital, but an ambulance was in attendance, police said.

Police were unable to give details of the driver's injuries.

Police established a crime scene and seized the vehicle for forensic examination.

Police would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist them with their inquiries.

He is in his early 30s, about 180 centimetres tall with a solid build. He was wearing a black baseball cap, white T-shirt and white shorts.
