Nearby residents described the explosion as very loud with a red and yellow smoke while the blast was also felt more than 30 kilometres away in Parkes.
Early indications point to the explosion originating from a storage shed, a number of kilometres from the Condobolin Road, filled with pyrotechnics.
Despite the fire being outside their jurisdiction, NSW Fire and Rescue took charge at the scene due to the hazardous nature of the materials.
Assisting Fire and Rescue were the Rural Fire Service, NSW Police and NSW Ambulance.
Approximately 20 houses within the two kilometre exclusion zone were evacuated with some residents returning from seasonal work, only to be forced to wait outside the exclusion zone.
The evacuation and exclusion zone were based on the standard operating procedure for the pyrotechnics facility.
One of the residents evacuated said they heard a very loud bang before smelling a “fireworks” scent and seeing coloured smoke.
At this stage, Fire and Rescue are doing an assessment of the area and will decide further action after consultation with the other assembled emergency services.
It is unknown for certain if there were any injuries.
MEANWHILE, the bushfire near Tullamore continues to burn out of control.
At 5pm today, the southern end of the fire was under control, however, the northern end was proving more difficult to contain.
Rural Fire Service were placing fire breaks in anticipation of a wind change.
