The Relay For Life is taking place in less than two weeks at Northparkes Oval, kicking off at 3:45pm on Saturday, November 1.
The program has just been finalised, revealing some amazing new entertainment and activities, including a free 30 minute Eat It to Beat It Healthy Lunchbox session which takes place at 5pm in the Survivors and Carers tent.
Eat It to Beat It is a practical new program focused on budget-friendly, healthy eating tips and techniques and aims to educate the whole family on how to get more fruit and vegetables into their diet without hurting the hip pocket.
New figures highlighted by Cancer Council NSW reveal that more than 90 per cent of adults in the Parkes region are not eating the recommended five serves of vegetables a day, with more than 50 per cent not eating the recommended two serves of fruit a day.
“Much more needs to be done when it comes to early-intervention health and nutrition education in the Parkes area” Fiona Markwick, Community Programs Coordinator for Cancer Council NSW’s Western Region said.
“We know that behind smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and having a diet high in fruit and vegetables is the single most important way to prevent cancer and other lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, high cholesterol and diabetes.”
“Eat It to Beat It works to complement existing programs delivered through schools.
“It takes a holistic approach to lifestyle disease prevention through simplifying healthy eating and providing guidance, ideas and resources for families who can sometimes struggle to find new ways to get the best bang for their healthy food buck.”
The 30 minute Healthy Lunchbox Session which is just one part of the Eat It to Beat It program will soon be delivered to parents at Kindergarten Orientation sessions in local schools.
Wilbur Harris, Parkes and Districts Relay For Life Committee Chair, said that he welcomes the Healthy Lunchbox session to Relay.
“I hope there will be many registrations for the session before the day, but there are limited spots so I suggest to book in early,” he said.
“This is a great new addition to the Relay event program that helps parents to pack healthy and budget friendly lunchboxes.
“You do need to register to attend the session though, and we anticipate that it will be very popular.”
