They wanted to do something practical and so decided to join CanTeen - a group for young people between the ages of 12 to 24 who are dealing with cancer.
Lynne is fighting Metastatic Thyroid cancer which has spread to her spine and lungs.
Beck and Lou joined CanTeen at the beginning of the year and both girls agree it has been of great support to them both.
“Since joining we have attended camps, been provided resources, counselling and become involved with a network of people who understand exactly what we are experiencing,” Beck said.
As CanTeen relies heavily on donations such as the National Bandana Day, both girls decided they would be part of this year’s Canteen Tea Party initiative.
On Saturday (October 11) they hosted Lou and Beck’s Tea-riffic T-party and attracted a total of 59 people which raised $1,118 at the door.
This figure was boosted to $1500 through online donations.
With National Bandana Day taking place on Friday, October 31, the girls took the opportunity to get in early by selling $186 worth of the artistic scarfs at the tea party.
“All funds raised by CanTeen goes towards programs that assist young people,” Beck said.
“Membership is free and that is why donations and initiatives for fundraising activities is so needed.”
Her sister Loucinda said donations can help CanTeen in providing a host of programs.
“For instance, $20 will get a young person on the new program and $50 will secure a member a recreation day to allow them a break from cancer,” she said.
“A $100 donation could pay for two bereaved members to attend what is referred to as a Good Grief program where they learn strategies to cope with their loss.
“And for those really generous people, $500 would allow a member to attend a five day camp to meet new people and take a break from everyday life,” Lou said.
Meanwhile, the girls are ecstatic with the result from their T-party.
“We would like to thank everyone who supported our fundraiser and urge everyone to jot down Friday, October 31, when they can assist further by purchasing a bandana in support of CanTeen,” Beck said.
