The accident occurred at approximately 8.50am some 28 kilometres east of Parkes on the Orange Road.
While both vehicles were written off in the accident, 56 year-old Parkes man Jack Dare walked away with a cut to his finger and a scratch to the forehead whilst a 19 year old Orange woman was treated for concussion at the scene and later transported by ambulance to Orange Hospital suffering suspected fractures to her arms.
Senior Constable Adam Piffarelli and Detective Sergeant Steve Howard were among the first officers on the scene.
There they discovered a crumbled 1980 Mazda van in the centre of the road and what remained of a Daihatsu `Terracan’ sedan off the road.
According to Snr Cons Piffarelli, the Mazda driven by Mr Dare was heading east towards Orange when it crashed head-on into the Daihatsu which was heading towards Parkes.
Initial investigations indicate the Daihatsu had travelled onto the wrong side of the road, overcorrected before hitting the Mazda.
Fire Brigade, RFS and ambulance personnel were quickly on the scene.
The accident resulted in closure of the Orange Road in both directions for a short period before alternating access for east and westbound traffic was allowed.
Both vehicles were later towed from the accident site.
Police interviewed Mr Dare at the scene of the accident and will await to take a statement from the injured woman who remains in Orange Base Hospital in a stable condition.
