An eight-year-old boy has died in hospital after he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Sydney's north-west on Monday evening.

Police said the boy was riding his bike during a thunderstorm when he was struck by a four-wheel-drive at the intersection of Paddock and Capertree streets in The Ponds about 5.45pm.
He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Children's Hospital in a critical condition.
He died a short time later.
The female driver of the car was assisting police with their investigation on Monday night.
