Now another night of mindless violence in Bondi threatens to add the famous thoroughfare to Sydney's growing roll call of mean streets.
Less than two days after a young man was jailed for an unprovoked attack on Campbell Parade last December, another young man allegedly hit out from behind with his victim left in a coma.
The 21-year-old from the South Coast was treated at the scene by paramedics for serious head injuries after collapsing from the alleged hit and smashing his skull on the footpath.
He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma. He was brought out of the coma on Sunday afternoon and is in a stable condition with his parents by his bedside.
A 32-year-old from from Hillsdale in south-east Sydney has been charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.
Campbell Parade seems to be shape shifting from a street of fun, surf and sun to a street of fear.
The first hint came in September 1996 when a 28-year-old British tourist, Brian Hagland, died after he was set upon by two men while walking home along Campbell Parade with his girlfriend.
And so it has gone every few years.
On Friday, David Hona, 20, was jailed for more than four years after an unprovoked assault in Campbell Parade 10 months ago left Michael McEwen, 24, in a coma for eight days and with a section of his skull removed.
Hona had been drinking and was on bail when he staged his Campbell Parade attack.
With the warm weekend weather, police had anticipated trouble and Acting Commander Eastern Suburbs Inspector Chris Stiles said more boot patrols had been put on duty.
But mindless violence is never predictable.
The young man from the South Coast had watched Sydney FC's match with Melbourne City on Saturday night before going to Campbell Parade with some mates for takeaway food.
Witnesses said he allegedly had an argument with another man outside the Oporto grilled chicken and burger bar about 12:40am.
He walked away only to allegedly suffer so-called "coward punch" from behind.
Inspector Stiles said it had been a "busy night" night for police in Bondi but the incident was not linked to lockout laws in Kings Cross and the city.
"It was just the fine weather," he said.
Waverley mayor Sally Betts said the council was concerned people could be deterred from enjoying Bondi after dark.
She said Waverley Council would now seriously consider installing its own CTC network along Campbell Parade.
"The restaurant scene in Hall Street is really jumping but the clients by and large are not young people," she said.
"While I'm unaware of the full circumstances of the latest incident in Campbell Avenue, I'm at a loss what to do about young people drinking too much. Its a problem for society, I guess, not just Waverley."
In a separate Bondi assault, a 29-year-old man was also hit from behind while walking along nearby Roscoe Street.
His two assailants stole his wallet and mobile phone before fleeing.
The man was also taken to St Vincent's Hospital where he was treated for cuts and bruises.
Inspector Stiles said the two assaults were not related.
Earlier police also attended a brawl at the Cock 'n Bull pub in Bondi Junction when a large number of men fought inside the bar before taking their fight onto Spring Street.
Police broke up the fight and an Irish man was treated by ambulance officers at the scene but he refused to be taken to hospital. At least six were arrested.
Two hours later, police broke up another large brawl in Spring Street outside the Tea Gardens Hotel in which two women were assaulted. Two people were arrested.
