Police say the man, from Hillsdale in south-east Sydney, was charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm after allegedly punching a 21-year-old in the back of the head and then kicking him in the chest as he lay on the ground.

The victim was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital in the early hours of Sunday and placed in an induced coma.

He was brought out of the coma after his condition improved and later discharged but will need treatment for bruising to his brain, a large laceration to his forehead, a black eye, a chipped tooth and cuts and bruises to his face and body.

The victim, believed to be from the NSW south coast, hit his head on the concrete as he fell to the ground.

He had been in Bondi watching an A-League game with friends before going to Campbell Parade for takeaway food.

His alleged attacker, who police say followed his victim after the pair had argued outside the Oporto chicken and burger store on Campbell Parade, turned up at Waverley Police Station on Sunday and was arrested.

Police charged him after seizing clothing from his home.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear in Waverley Local Court on November 19.

Acting Commander Eastern Suburbs Inspector Chris Stiles on Sunday morning said it had been a "busy night " night for police in Bondi.

"The warm weather had brought people out," he said.

The attack came less than two days after David Hona, 20, was sentenced to four years and nine months' jail for bashing Michael McEwen, 23,  in Campbell Parade on December 14.
