But with thousands of Australians expected to make a pilgrimage to Gallipoli next year for the centenary anniversary of the landings, Turkey's government has been quick to emphasise the rest of the country is safe.

"The distance between Gallipoli and our border is more than 1000 kilometres," said Turkey's ambassador to Australia, Reha Keskintepe.

The Foreign Affairs department expanded its travel warning for Turkey on Tuesday amid fierce fighting with Islamic State fighters in a Syrian border town.

Australians are urged to "reconsider your need to travel" in the south of Turkey anywhere within 50 kilometres of the border with Syria.

The travel warning said 1.5 million Syrian refugees had fled into Turkey and had clashed with locals in a number of Turkish cities.

But Mr Keskintepe said there had only been isolated clashes and a few incidents. He said the turmoil at the border had been going on for several years, but Turkey remained a safe country for tourists and more than 190,000 Australians had visited the country last year.
