On Tuesday, the dollar slid to a near four-year low against its American counterpart, partly because of the US's gradual economic recovery.

For French tourists Juliette and Quentin Pozzi, who arrived in Sydney on Tuesday, the good exchange rate has already proved a windfall for their tight travelling budget, which they hope will see them through an eight-month-long working holiday.

"We opened an account in Australia, and even when we transferred all our money from our French bank account to here we noticed the difference," Mrs Pozzi, 25, said.

"The fact that the Australian dollar is lower allows us to do more stuff, things we might not have done because of the money," she said.

While Australians have enjoyed the fruits of a high dollar for years to splash out on international holidays, the recent dive could tempt more people to stay closer to home, which would be an added boon to the tourism industry.

It is not just the US that will be more expensive to travel to, though. The currencies of other popular destinations such as Singapore, Canada, Switzerland, Europe, Britain, South Africa, Malaysia, China, Japan and Thailand have all strengthened against the Australian dollar for the month to date.

But there are a couple of bright opportunities left: the New Zealand dollar and Brazilian real have weakened recently and still represent good value for money for holidaymakers.

If the dollar continues to fall, a post-World Cup South American sojourn or a trip to visit our Tasman Sea neighbours may be a financially attractive option.

Data from Tourism Australia suggests that a domestic holiday is becoming an increasingly popular choice. Its 10-year forecast expects the number of domestic nights to rise from  293.2 million in 2013-14 to 316.4 million in 2022-23.

Of course, Australians are known for being a well-travelled lot and plenty of people will continue with their plans to visit overseas destinations.

Since September 1, the dollar has fallen from US93.29¢ to as low as US86.84¢. The 7 per cent fall in the dollar's value can add up, especially for a family planning an overseas jaunt.

Those that paid for their upcoming holiday earlier in the year will generally avoid the price increases associated with a dollar dive, except for spending money while they are away.

Those organised enough to lock in their spending money on a prepaid travel card will also experience little, if any, pain.

Of course, if your reason for travelling overseas is to see family or friends, the alternative is to invite them to come Down Under and leave that international trip for another time.

It will remove the financial pain for those who haven't paid yet and would boost the economy.
