The egg-shaped space capsule that brought the iconic television character Mork from Ork to Earth in the TV sitcom Mork and Mindy is on the auction block.

Though items of television memorabilia pass through auction houses around the world frequently, unusually high interest in the egg-shaped capsule is no doubt fuelled by the fact that Mork's real-life alter-ego, comedian Robin Williams, died in August.

Also on sale is the red and silver spacesuit worn by Williams in the TV series

Sale of the items are being handled by the Profiles in History auction house in Los Angeles.

The company says the egg has been listed with an estimated price-tag of around $US4,000-6,000 ($A4,500-6,780).

The spacesuit is expected to fetch more, somewhere in the region of $US15,000-20,000 ($A16,943-22,491).

"To the best of our knowledge this is the only hero Mork spacesuit costume to ever come up for public auction," the auction house's chief executive Joe Maddalena said.

The suit was designed by the show's wardrobe designer Robert Fuca; the egg was produced by the show's art department.

Fuca, who died in 2002, worked on a number of well known television programs, including Gilligan's Island, the TV version of Planet of the Apes and Webster.

The two Mork & Mindy items are being offered during a four day auction of Hollywood memorabilia planned for next month.

Other items up for auction at the same event include a prison sweatshirt worn by Steve McQueen in The Great Escape (with an estimated auction price of $US12,000-plus), Robert Baratheon's crown from the first season of Game of Thrones ($US15,000-plus) and the whip which featured in the 1981, 1984 and 1989 Indiana Jones movies (US$50,000-plus).

The auction will be held over October 17 to 20 in Los Angeles.
